I thought some might find this interesting, here is the text from the Itinerary kept by the Bordeaux pilgrims that Mark talked about last night. The pilgrims have just left Jerusalem went through Jericho and on to the Dead Sea.....


From Jericho (Ariha) to the Dead sea - miles ix.

The water of it is very bitter, and in it there is no kind of fish whatever, nor any vessel; and if a man casts himself into it in order to swim, the water turns him over.

From thence to the Jordan, where the Lord was baptized by John - miles v.

There is a place by the river, a little hill upon the further (left) bank, from which Elijah was caught up into heaven



An Itinerary was not uncommon in the Roman world, it was a detailed record of a trip including all overnight stays and horse changes, the entire record also includes visits to points of interest not only to a Christian but to a Roman citizen as well, such as the tomb of Hannibal and the town where fine chariot horses are bred.
